About the Dictionary of Tibetan Pastoralism

This is a web-based version of a dictionary with about 4,900 entries that comprehensively collects and records folk vocabulary used in daily life of yaks and sheep herders in the Amdo region of Tibet. The pilot version was released in March 2018, and after revisions were made, it was relaunched in May 2022 with enhanced functions as a classification dictionary. (Click here for details.)

How to use the dictionary

  • It is possible to search from the classification menu or by using the search box (Tibetan, English).
  • Tibetan can be searched either in Tibetan scripts or in Wylie transliteration.
  • n. refers to a noun and v. refers to a verb.
  • The first level of Tibetan notation for verbs is in the imperfect aspect, and the second level is in the perfect aspect.
  • The string enclosed in / is the pronunciation notation.
  • Click sound to listen to the Amdo Tibetan pronunciation of the item (the phonemic inventory of Dme-shul dialect of Amdo Tibetan).
